Do you have a story idea, but are struggling to come up with an interesting setting or characters? Or, are you just struggling to come up with a story idea all together? Have you tried using pictures for inspiration? Well, you’re going to want to start today.

Images are a great source of inspiration. When you’re tying to come up with an interesting setting or a cool character, using images can be a create way to spark your creativity. There are many resources you can use to find images specific to a topic you’re looking for. I personally use Pinterest and Pexels. Here’s why.

Pinterest

Pinterest is an image sharing website where users can upload images known as “pins”. Users can also re-pin images others have upload to their boards. Boards are what you would consider “cork boards”; they are where you collect pins.

I use Pinterest to come up with ideas and inspiration for stories. On Pinterest you can follow topics, boards, and accounts related to the types of things you’re looking for. For instance, looking for character inspiration? You can search those exact words and get an array of results to choose from. They even have sub-categories where you can narrow down your search to gender, age and genre.

To setup your boards, you can create and title them according to the topics you’re interested in. For my Pinterest, I have a “writing inspo” and a setting inspiration board to start. In my “writing inspo” board I have various images that spark a feeling or interest in me. This is what you’ll want to do when collecting pins.

You can also use Pexels. It’s a website that posts royalty and license free images. Their inventory can be limited, but I’ve found great images for setting and characters. All you have to do is search a word or topic. You can even download images to create your own story collages.

In Summary

Using images are great to help spark scenes in your mind and bring your ideas to life. They are also helpful when you’re trying to find a mood or tone for your story. So, next time you’re struggling to come up with ideas, use pictures for inspiration. If you need inspiration or writing tips, check out my Pinterest, Shantal Writes.
